Presenting Material Online (Asynchronously)

Developing and Using Engaging Online Activities and Assignments

In online education, the term asynchronous refers to instructor-student interaction which does not occur at the same time.

Make learning active. Students learn by doing. Use the online environment to create active learning opportunities for students that help them engage with challenging concepts or that provide self-assessment or self-reflection opportunities. Online activities and assignments should provide an opportunity for students to put the course material they learn from lectures and in asynchronous sessions into practice. When students apply their learning it becomes meaningful. Providing real world, authentic tasks that are relevant to students’ lives or future professional lives that are challenging, but achievable, will increase motivation and engagement, and ultimately, learning.
