Time Off and Leaves

Leaves: FMLA, MA PFML NY DBL + Others

Federal Leave: Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

Eligible employees can take up to 12 workweeks of FMLA job-protected unpaid leave in a 12-month period for:

  • The birth, adoption or foster placement of a child with you,
  • Your serious mental or physical health condition that makes you unable to work,
  • To care for your spouse, child or parent with a serious mental or physical health condition, and
  • Certain qualifying reasons related to the foreign deployment of your spouse, child or parent who is a military servicemember.

State Leave: Massachusetts Family and Medical Leave (MA PFML)

Covered individuals may be entitled to family and medical leave for the following reasons:

  • Up to 20 weeks of paid medical leave in a benefit year if they have a serious health condition that incapacitates them from work.
  • Up to 12 weeks of paid family leave in a benefit year related to the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child, to care for a family member with a serious health condition, or because of a qualifying exigency arising out of the fact that a family member is on active duty or has been notified of an impending call to active duty in the Armed Forces.
  • Up to 26 weeks of paid family leave in a benefit year to care for a family member who is a covered service member with a serious health condition.

State Leave: NY Paid Family Leave and Disability Leave

Disability benefits: If you are unable to work because of an illness or injury, not work-related, you may be entitled to receive weekly benefits from your employer, his or her Insurance carrier, or from the Special Fund for Disability Benefits.

Paid Family Leave: Paid family leave is insurance that provides job protected time off to:

  • Bond with a newly born, adopted, or fostered child
  • Care for a family member with a serious health condition
  • Assist loved ones when a family member is deployed abroad on active military service

Short-Term Disability (STD) & Long-Term Disability (LTD):

Vacation

We recognize that employees need time away from work to rest, reflect, and re-energize. We provide staff employees with vacation time for these purposes. Faculty do not earn vacation days. Regular staff employees (benefit eligible part-time and full-time) accrue vacation. Temporary workers do not accrue vacation.
